Using Christian Norberg-Schulz’s theories in Concept of Dwelling and Genius Loci towards a Phenomenology of Architecture, this article explains the concepts of sense of place, placelessness and dwelling and describes the path that characters take from known places to unknown to find their identities in danger alongside. They continue the journey to the most remote cities of Morocco where nothing is similar to anything they had known before. ![]() ![]() The comparison made by Kit in order to magnify the difference between her and Port with their tourist friend Tunner, gradually turns to reality. They do not refer to themselves as “tourists”, but as “traveler” because they believe that a tourist is someone who thinks about going home the moment they arrive whereas a traveler might not come back at all. “The Sheltering Sky” tells the story of an American couple named Port and Kit who leave the United States for Morocco soon after the WWII. The so-called “Eastern Trilogy” is a sign for this proof that the location has a significant importance in these films.
