If you’re looking for a historical fiction series that will keep you on the edge of your seat, then look no further than The Century Trilogy. The second book, Winter of the World, picks up where Fall of Giants left off and covers the years during and after World War II. Follett does an excellent job of introducing the reader to the different families and their respective countries. Follett does an excellent job of capturing historical events and turning them into a fascinating story that is impossible to put down. Each family experiences different events that shaped the century, and the trilogy follows their stories as they intertwine with one another. She doesn’t know what to do, and, since James is the President of the United States, she’s got to do something. The stress of his job is killing him, and at night she finds him calling out the name of Kent, his best friend and head bodyguard. This is a charming, sexy, and emotionally satisfying love story that hasn’t gotten nearly the amount of hype it deserves.Ĭarlene Broderick is worried about her husband. So what better excuse than this interminable season of politicking to turn our attention to a book where the President needs a little TLC in the form of his wife and his head of security? Yes, I see that skeptical look on your face as you doubt how a book with that premise can possibly be good, because I had that look on my face until Shira Glassman set me straight. In these divisive times, with election season gearing up here in the United States for approximately the next 438 years, there’s very little that we can all agree on, except for romance novels and how awesome they are. President by Lauren GallagherĬontemporary Erotic Romance published by Samhain on 09 Jun 15 It was tasked with tracking down and capturing German scientists who were believed to be working on atomic, biological, or chemical warfare. Operation Alsos was a top secret mission that was an offshoot of the Manhattan Project. Insights from Chapter 5 Insights from Chapter 1 Insights on Annie Jacobsen's Operation Paperclip Its earlier version, the V-1 flying bomb, had been raining terror down on cities across northern Europe since the first one hit London in 1944. It was 46 feet long, and could travel a distance of 190 miles at speeds up to five times the speed of sound. #4 The V-2 rocket was the most advanced flying weapon ever created. On this night, the banquet hall was decorated in full Nazi Party regalia. The castle was being readied for a celebration. #3 In December 1944, a party was under way at a medieval showpiece called Varlar Castle in Germany. They also found out that the Nazis were conducting human medical experiments. #2 Goudsmit and his team read the documents, and found out that the University of Strasbourg had been doubling as a biological warfare research base for the Third Reich. #1 Operation Alsos was a top secret mission that was an offshoot of the Manhattan Project. Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Known as Volume III, this version of Excalibur is something I've been dying to read because its basically a love letter to the fans of the ever-enduring core relationship between the aforementioned bookend-soulmates. And because this is Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr we're talking about, of course the issues are bound to get crazy, cheesy, emotastic and kindda-sorta homoerotic depending on how you interpret some scenes. But because this is the X-Men and Claremont we are talking about, such a nice premise is misleading and deceptive. They are joined by Callisto and a delightful gang of teenage mutants and a couple of idealists who want to make a difference. Rather, this is the story where Prof X and Mags "eloped" to Genosha so they can re-establish its sovereignty and civilization once again. Some days, I think they are my special slice of insanity, and I allow myself to indulge in them because anything in life compared to this heartbreaking relationship seems banal and boring.Īnd because I ship Professor X and Magento shamelessly, more so when it comes to their hot, younger versions in the X-Men: First Class film, I'm of course deliciously and disgustingly excited to read Chris Claremont's 2004 series Excalibur III which had nothing to do with the original Captain Britain material it was originally about. I'm a rampaging Cherik shipper who needs to be sterilized because I'm afraid I've become a danger to the human species solely because I CAN'T STOP THINKING AND TALKING ABOUT CHARLES AND ERIK AS A PAIRING. When they venture out on it, the sea creates a great atmosphere and emphasizes their solidarity and remoteness. Each is an artist, and they live on a tiny island on the southern side of Finland there’s a great line when they’re on the ocean during a fog and worry they’re going to end up in Estonia. They are best friends and for years have been happy to limit their society to each other. Hmm, if I “highly” recommended The True Deceiver, I’d best “strongly” recommend Fair Play.įair Play concerns two old women, Jonna and Mari. It’s not necessarily summery, but if you’re feeling a bit chilly, this book will warm you up with its subtle love. It’s an excellent book, quite wintry, that I highly recommend if you’re feeling too warm this summer (well, I strongly recommend it even if you aren’t). I’m happy to say I liked Jansson’s Fair Play even more. Fair Play by Tove Jansson ( Rent spel, 1982) translated from the Swedish by Thomas Teal (2007) NYRB Classics (2011) 100 ppĮarlier this year, Tove Jansson’s The True Deceiver won the Best Translated Book Award (my review of the book here). Tender and shocking, Trespasses is an unforgettable debut of people trying to live ordinary lives in extraordinary times. And as she is forced to tread lines she never thought she would cross, tensions in the town are escalating, threatening to destroy all she is working to hold together. In the class Cushla teaches, the vocabulary of seven-year-old children now includes phrases like ‘petrol bomb’ and ‘rubber bullets’. But here, love is never far from violence, and this encounter will change both of their lives forever.Īs people get up each morning and go to work, school, church or the pub, the daily news rolls in of another car bomb exploded, another man beaten, killed or left for dead. There is nothing special about the day Cushla meets Michael, a married man from Belfast, in the pub owned by her family. This is why I read and this is also why I love Irish fiction. Published by Bloomsbury Publishing Released 3rd May 2022 My Thoughts: This novel. If Michael Agnew had not walked through the door of the pub on a quiet night in February in his white shirt. Tender and shocking, Trespasses is an unforgettable debut of people trying to live ordinary lives in extraordinary times. If Seamie McGeown had not found himself alone on a dark street. One by one, she undid each event, each decision, each choice. Jules Verne was the Isaac Asimov of the 19th century: an erudite, polished writer who took great care to imbue his work with scientific plausibility, and very little care to make his characters particularly interesting. "Descend, bold traveller, into the crater of the jokul of Sneffels, which the shadow of Scartaris touches before the kalends of July, and you will attain the centre of the earth which I have done, Arne Saknussemm." It vividly animates a fantastical subterranean world as an intrepid crew, led by the eccentric Otto Lidenbrock, traverses the planet’s core and its various bizarre obstacles: giant mushrooms and insects, a herd of mastodons, prehistoric humans, a treacherous pit of magma, and more. Journey to the Center of the Earthh is one of literature’s earliest works of science fiction. Even while attending the University of California at Berkley, Yoshiko often faced the same dilemma of being ostracized. Many white students at University High School in Oakland didn't invite her to their parties and wouldn't socialize with her, deeming her a foreigner. She also kept a journal to record her thoughts and events.Įnveloped in love and tradition at home, Yoshiko weathered the prejudice she sometimes faced. Yoshiko loved to write, and her stories played out on pieces of brown wrapping paper. Though the Great Depression raged, the Uchida family enjoyed comforts because of Takashi's well-paying job and their own frugality. Her father worked as a businessman for Mitsui and Company in San Francisco, and Iku wrote poetry, passing along her love of literature to her girls. Yoshiko, born on November 24, 1921, was the second daughter of Japanese immigrant parents Takashi and Iku. |
